A salute to some of New York's late heroes will happen virtually this year due to the pandemic.

Traditionally, the state hosts its annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony at Albany's Empire State Plaza in October, marking Fire Prevention Week.

But this year, 21 names will be read out and added to the Memorial Wall in a shorter ceremony that will go up on the memorial website.

The State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is not content with that, though.

Families of those being honored will also be invited back for next year's ceremony, to see the tribute to their loved ones happen in person.
