The Ukrainian community in Syracuse came together to mourn the lives lost on Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752. Saturday, a memorial service was held at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in remembrance of the 176 people on board.

"The service not only recognized the lives that were lost, but also prayed for the future of all of us as a community, as a world, that we can live in peace moving forward,” said Vice President of the Syracuse Branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, Greg Lisnyczyj.

The service included a special way to memorialize those lost on the plane.

"We had the flame of Bethlehem, from the Peace Light that was lit over the Christmas holidays. And from that candle, we actually lit a candle for each one of the victims to commemorate the peace that these holiday times were for all of us,” Lisnyczyj said.

Saturday’s memorial was held during Ukrainian school, giving children an opportunity to learn from the tragedy.

"This is a global issue, it's a human toll. Even though they've been learning about the war in Ukraine that's been going on since 2014, we wanted them to understand how violence and acts of war, even if at times unintentional, impacts innocent lives," said Lida Buniak, president of the Syracuse Branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.

Flight 752 crashed shortly after taking off in Tehran bound for Kiev, killing all on board. Iran says they unintentionally shot down the plane due to “human error.”
