Barbershops and salons, like Palace Barbershop in Rensselaer, have been closed since the middle of March.
Palace owner Marlon Sousis has created a plan that he thinks will enable him to safely reopen.
He says by putting guidelines in place to increase sanitation and limit the number of clients and employees, they’ll be able to safely cut people’s hair.
"We’re going to remove the waiting areas so people can’t congregate there. We’re definitely going to make sure everybody’s wearing gloves, masks, face shields," says Sousis.
Other proposals include checking the temperatures of clients and limiting the use of cash payments.
"If you look at the schooling regiment from the schools in New York State that give you your barber license, a majority of what you’re learning is hitting on sanitation requirements by the state,” said Palace manager Jeremy Shuhart.
The Palace Barbershop is hoping to be among the first businesses to reopen. The state still does not consider it an essential service.
