The Albany community heard from an addiction recovery advocate this weekend, one many know from Major League Baseball.

Former star Darryl Strawberry spoke about his struggle with addiction at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. It's one in a long series of speaking events for Strawberry who has spent years traveling the country to aid the fight against addiction.

Strawberry says he believes the path to recovery lies in finding less destructive ways to, quote, "fill the void."

"Drug addiction is a spiritual brokenness. I know for myself because I was there," said Strawberry. "I've had 16 years of recovery and I understand that if you're broken on the inside, and you don't fill that inside void, you're going to try to fill it with everything else to make you well."

In addition to public speaking, Strawberry also works as a preacher and has opened an addiction recovery center of his own.
