A 20-year-old man succumbed to gunshot wounds from Monday night, near the 300 block of 2nd Street between Judson Street and North Lake Avenue.

Police said Kenneth Love of Albany was found shot in the torso. He was treated at the scene and then transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

This is the city's second homicide and 35th shooting in Albany of the year. Back in July, Albany police said a man was shot in the leg in the same area, but he survived.

Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins says the concern is now centered on youth violence. Hawkins says even though violence is down when compared to last year, officers are seeing a noticeable trend in young people involved in these violent acts. He says it’s a ripple effect they are trying to get to the bottom of.

“Young people who experience violence experience trauma also. When they experience that type of trauma, it makes them more susceptible to becoming a victim or perpetrators in the future, so the stakes are really high. We as a community have to come together and give our young people tools to try and escape violence,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins says they have a few leads they are working on in the Kenneth Love case.

Hawkins says he will attend Tuesday night's community meeting to continue the discussion on violence in the city.
