Time Warner Cable News highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap."
Texture
It is most definitely that time of year when so many of us like to, in our free time, get comfy on the couch and catch up on some reading. If that sounds like you, then Texture is a mobile app you’re going to want to check out.
In almost every blurb, blog, or story that has or ever will be written about it, the analogy will be made that it’s like Netflix for magazines and, quite frankly, that’s exactly what it is. For a monthly subscription fee, you get unlimited access to what basically amounts to an entire newsstand of magazines.
While connected to the internet, all you have to do is tap on a magazine to open it and start reading. If you want to save something for later, either an article or an entire magazine, just tap the three dots and a bunch of options come up. It is there you can download for offline reading and even access back issues of a particular magazine. On top of that, literally on top there, if you have starred some magazines as your favorites, a list of some of the hottest articles from those periodicals will be listed for you to check out.
Texture is out on majority of mobile devices. You can check it out for free with a one week trial. After that, it’s about $10 a month for the basic membership, $15 for premium. The only difference between the two, Basic gives full access to monthly magazines, premium includes monthlies and weeklies.
Highlights Hidden Pictures
For kids, how about getting, arguably, just the best part of one of the most well-known children’s magazines ever. Highlights Hidden Pictures Puzzles is an app devoted entirely to finding those pictures within the picture.
Just like on paper, what you’re looking for is on the left, and, of course, rather than circling what you find in crayon, you simply tap it. This one is also free for a week and then costs $2.99 per month. What that gets you is new content and puzzles the first of every month. Highlights Hidden Pictures Puzzles is out on iOS and Android devices.
