What You Need To Know

  • 3 temperature records were broken last month

  • It got as hot as 92 degrees during the entire month of August

  • The Buffalo Airport picked up 3.68 inches of rain

August marked the last full month of summer, and it definitely felt that way. In fact, this was the hottest August on record in Buffalo.

The monthly average temperature came in at 75.7 degrees. It wasn't a huge lead, but it was enough to surpass August 2016’s average of 75.6.

In the grand scheme of things, though, it was a noticeable warmup. Compared to the 30-year average, it ended up being 5.3 degrees above average.

Warm nights

All the warm nights really helped push last month into that top spot. Over half of the month featured low temperatures of 70 or above. In fact, it happened 16 times. That was also the most on record for the month of August.

With that said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some temperature records were broken last month.

Aug. 10 featured a low of just 77 degrees, breaking the 121-year-old record of 76. A more recent broken record happened on Aug. 18. Buffalo never got below 73 that day, beating 2017’s record of 72.

The month ended on an unusually warm note, too. A record warm low temperature of 72 degrees was set on Aug. 29, sliding past the three-year-old record by one degree.

Afternoon highs

In terms of daytime highs, the temperature got as hot as 92 degrees on Aug. 9.

There were two other 90-degree days, but those happened during the last week of the month.

Rainfall

Shifting to rain, at least August wasn’t as soggy as July when Buffalo picked up about seven-and-a-half inches of rain. This time around, the airport saw 3.68 inches.

That still ended up being 0.45 inches above average. Keep in mind, roughly 2 inches of that fell within 24 hours between Aug. 13 and 14.

Outside of that, only seven other days featured measurable rain that added up to more than just a trace.
