BUFFALO, N.Y. — Presidents Day was originally dedicated to celebrating the birthday of the first president of the United States of America, George Washington. The day has since changed to celebrate all U.S. presidents.

President Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president and has important historic ties with the city of Buffalo.

The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site in downtown Buffalo is one of the four places outside the nation's capital where a president took the oath of office. Stanton Hudson, executive director of the site, says that's because President William McKinley was shot in Buffalo during the Pan-American Exposition and died in the city. President Roosevelt had to take oath at the site.

To learn more about Theodore Roosevelt and his legacy, you can take a tour of the Inaugural site in person or online at trsite.org.
