Fall sports are returning Monday across New York state.

Things will look different. Not every school is participating, nor is every sport fully back just yet.

Mike Clonan, athletic director at East Syracuse-Minoa High School, is excited, and he's not the only one.

For sports that have been deemed low-risk, like cross country, golf, and tennis, competition is allowed to begin, along with practices. But for sports classified as higher-risk, like football, wrestling, and volleyball, they can begin practicing. As far as playing games however, those will have to wait.

In order to practice, schools have to follow state guidance. This means limiting capacity of indoor facilities to 50 percent occupancy, and as far as people coming to watch a game or a match, there can be no more than two spectators per player. Obviously, social distancing and face masks will be required as well.

In addition to that, student athletes can't travel for practices yet. Any practice or play outside of a school district's region or county won't be allowed until October 19. For section 3, athletic directors are in constant communication with both each other, and with the families in their district. Clonan said the message to both is constant: Be ready for anything.

"Everything is fluid right now, the whole situation is fluid," Clonan said. "So we have to be ready in this position to make change and adjust. My message to the coaches and the kids is to be extremely flexible during this time."

The state has split sports into three clasifications of risk, low-medium and high. Those specific classifications can be found on the governors website.
