A tough scout because he played exclusively Massachusetts prep hockey his senior year, Michael Fisher is gaining draft stock with his impressive athleticism, raw talent and high upside.

What You Need To Know

  • Michael Fisher is heading to the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms next season
  • Fisher was the top-scoring defenseman in high school prep hockey across the country last season
  • Fisher placed first of all combine invitees in the agility and balance tests

Fisher was team captain of the St. Mark’s Lions who earned back-to-back titles his junior and senior years. Fisher was also elected to Head Monitor, or senior class president, indicative of his natural leadership abilities and character. The Westborough, Mass. native once brought multiple teammates home to quarantine in his basement for two weeks during a team COVID outbreak.

“I’m a little bit more than just a kid who plays hockey,” Fisher said. “But when it comes to an NHL hockey team, it’s really like within the community, I’m more than a hockey player. I take pride in being a good kid.”

The 6’2” defenseman was named New England Hockey Journal’s Defenseman of the Year after a noteworthy senior season of 50 points in 28 games with a 22-game point streak including three hat tricks. That campaign led to a change his commitment from Princeton to Northeastern, a program known for developing skilled defensemen.

“I’m a really good skater,” Fisher said. “I think I have that, in tandem with my size, I think works really well together.

Fisher interviewed with 11 teams at the NHL Scouting Combine, where he placed first in both agility tests and top-25 in 14 of the 16 fitness tests.

“My pitch is usually like, I’m here now. I’m a pretty good hockey player. Just wait and see,” Fisher said. “That’s really my pitch. This is a long-term investment. I’m going to be a really good player over time. This is just the beginning for me.”

The top-scoring defenseman in prep hockey last year definitely raised some eyebrows at his combine results. Fisher is expected to join the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms this fall before joining the Huskies program. With his rising profile, don’t be surprised to see Fisher off the board by the time the Sabres’ fourth-round pick at 106th overall.
