The Buffalo Police Department has released its 2023 crime report.

For a second straight year, the report shows a drop in both fatal and nonfatal shootings as well as rapes and robberies. According to the data, the city of Buffalo saw a 58% reduction in shooting homicides, 28% reduction in shooting incidents and a 32% reduction in shooting victims.

In the report, Mayor Byron Brown said in part:

"We are in the midst of a sustained reduction in violent crime over these past few years, with 2023 showing a 19% decrease when compared to the preceding five-year average. I thank Commissioner Gramaglia for his steadfast leadership of the department, through which his officers prove their dedication to community, duty, integrity, respect, professionalism, and excellence each day of the year. The city of Buffalo is safe because of this infinite commitment."

Despite the good news, it comes as no surprise that the data shows one crime skyrocketed in frequency. Vehicle thefts are up around 104% compared to 2022.

The report also highlighted the growth of the Behavioral Health Team, which has grown to eight officers.
