ELBA, N.Y. — One of the victims from the Mercy Flight helicopter crash in Elba on Tuesday was pilot James Sauer.
Prior to Mercy Flight, the Churchville native was a member of the National Guard.
He also worked for New York State Police and flew as a civilian pilot.
Sauer also worked as an RPD officer from 1993 to 2001.
"Obviously we're saddened by the event,” Interim Rochester Police Chief David Smith said. “He had a long and distinguished career in public service. He was here from '93 to 2001 and he left us to do exactly what he was doing. He felt it was a hirer calling. Our thoughts and prayers are definitely with the family, we appreciate everything he's done for the community."
"We are heartbroken at the loss of Officer Sauer, who served a lifetime of dedication to public service," RPD Lt. Greg Bello said in a statement. "He is truly a hero to the Greater Rochester Community."
The investigation into what caused the crash could take some time, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
