The Buffalo Police Department is eliminating its traffic unit.

Captain Jeff Rinaldo says up to 50 officers will be reassigned.

The traffic unit focuses on parades and large events.

"During COVID, there aren't the large scale events that we normally have in the city of Buffalo so this will make the operation of our police department more efficient, this will reduce overtime, and other costs for the residents of our community,” said Rinaldo.

Mayor Brown says traffic at future events can be controlled by officers in nearby districts.

Buffalo Police Benevolent Association President John Evans says the officers will have to bid their jobs throughout the department.

He expects there will be a greater need for their services once the pandemic runs its course.

The changes will take effect on January 18.
