Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said he’ll announce new initiatives on mental health and policing in the coming days.

Brown addressed the shooting of a man by Buffalo police during a mental health crisis on his weekly radio show on WUFO Sunday.

Brown notes the man who was shot, 60-year-old Willie Henley, had severe mental health issues, which made responding to the incident tougher for officers.

"Yesterday’s incident was another case that we've seen in our country involving people with mental health crisis needs and their involvement with police,” Brown said. “These situations can be very dangerous and very difficult for all involved.”

Brown asks the public to remain patient as he works to put these new measures and reforms in place.

The mayor said those initiatives included discussions with the police union, which have been successful.

People rallied Sunday in Buffalo over the shooting. The family of Henley is demanding answers regarding the incident.

City leaders said they recognize that police officers are not equipped with proper training to deal with a mental health situation.
