New information has been released on a deadly Memorial Day weekend crash in Wyoming County.
- Three people dead following crash in Wyoming County
- 4-year-old girl remains in intensive care
- Richard Sawicki, 20, of Lackawanna charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, DWI, and reckless driving
A 4-year-old girl remains in intensive care days after a crash that killed three people, including another 4-year-old.
It happened at 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the town of Sheldon.
The family of nine, from New Jersey, were packed in a seven-passenger van heading to Niagara Falls when it was hit by a pickup truck driven by an alleged drunk driver.
Three people in the van died. Ondina Castro de la Cruz, 47, and Mayelin Brito-Castro, 32, were killed when they were ejected from the van.
Kyara Hernandez-Brito, 4, was rushed to a hospital in Warsaw, where she later died.
Two other adults, Mayelin's 14-year-old son, a 10-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl have all been treated and released.
A GoFundMe has been set up for memorial and funeral expenses, in addition to support services.
Another 4-year-old girl is in critical condition at Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo.
The sheriff's office says not everyone in the van was wearing a seat belt and there were no car seats for the children — but the district attorney says that shouldn't matter.
"Today is the day the victim-blaming is going to stop. This family is in crisis, they are in mourning. They are worried about their children; they are worried about making arrangements for their fallen family members. What they need is our support,” said Wyoming County DA Donald O’Geen.
Sheriff's deputies say the pickup driver, 20-year-old Richard Sawicki from Lackawanna, was still drunk from a party the night before and sped through a stop sign.
They're still waiting on results of a toxicology report.
Sawicki is being held at the Wyoming County Jail on $200,000 bail.
