A fire at a North Tonawanda laundromat sent smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

The fire was brought under control early Monday afternoon, according to the North Tonawanda fire department.

No injuries have been reported.

North Tonawanda Fire Chief Joe Sikora said they had difficulties shutting the gas off in the laundromat, and because of the size of the fire, there were also difficulties with the water supply.

The reason there is so much smoke is because the asphalt roof collapsed.

The smoke has been blowing in surrounding neighborhoods. Keli Troidl, who lives on Thompson Street, said she had to close all of her windows.

“It’s all over the place, it’s down the side streets people are closing their windows even over here all these houses,” she said. “I just worry about the house that’s next door to it if it’s coming close because it was fully engulfed in minutes.”

Since crews are still working to put the rest of the smoke out, they haven’t been able to determine what started the fire yet.

The businesses next to the laundromat — a meat market, barber shop and computer repair store — were also destroyed by this fire. The house next to it is damaged but the full extent is not yet known.
