If you like highlight reel goals, forward Trevor Zegras is your guy.
The winger has several that blew up on YouTube, and there were plenty to choose from as NHL Central Scouting's sixth-ranked North American skater scored 26 in 60 games for the U.S. under 18 team.
But the USA development program product learned way more than scoring while in Michigan.
"I think my skating, I think my edge work got a lot better. I think tons of video at the NTDP, so my hockey brain grew a lot, and being around so many good players, take what you think is great in their game and add it to your game,” said Zegras.
Now before you start to think the New York native is all about himself, Zegras is just one of three players ever to record over 100 assists for the development program — and he did it in just 116 games.
"He wants the puck, he wants to score, he wants to be in on the play. He goes out and makes things happen. He is a player that forces you to notice him. He jumps out and pops at you every game,” said Dan Marr, director of NHL Central Scouting.
And what may have stood out to me the most when I spoke to Zegras at the Combine was how excited he was to talk about possibly joining the Sabres.
"I think they are right there, I think maybe just a couple more pieces, but you saw how they were playing at the beginning of the year. Jack Eichel is a BU guy, so I watched him tons. Rasmus Dahlin is going to be some player in the future, but they have a lot of good pieces, so I think they are right there,” said Zegras.
Zegras will attend Boston University next season, joining Eichel as a Terrier.
Next up, we stay on offense for our next profile as I look at center Peyton Krebs.
