Don't let Cole Caufield's diminutive size — 5'7" 165 lbs. — sway your opinion on the smooth-skating, stat stuffer.
The Wisconsin native has done most of his damage against elite competition — we're talking 72 goals in 64 games for the USA U18 team.
"I think they are getting a very competitive goal scorer and I think that is my best asset. A guy that loves to compete, loves to win, hates to lose. I'm just going to keep proving people wrong and if you draft me, I will be a big impact player on your team and I just want to have a lot of success,” said Caufield.
Caufield is also one of the fastest risers in Central Scouting's rankings: he moved from 15 to 8 since the midterm ratings came out. The winger gives a lot of that credit to playing with several other first rounders with the USA development program.
"The practices were almost like games. You are competing for ice time, you are competing for bragging rights in practice and mini-games. Every time you stepped on the ice with them you wanted to prove you are still working and I think that is why everyone got some much better these past years,” said Caufiled.
When asked about him potentially joining the Sabres, his answer is one blue and gold fans will enjoy.
“They had some success at the beginning of the year. You could see the potential that they have. They are a pretty young team, so I think they will keep getting better from here and it would be pretty special to be part of that,” said Caufield.
One other fun note about Caufield is he grew up playing football and baseball too, and says he believes athletes should play more than one sport, but I think it'll just be hockey at the University of Wisconsin next season.
We finish up our profiles next with one of Cole's teammates in consensus top prospect Jack Hughes.
