BUFFALO, N.Y. — The mother of a survivor of the Buffalo mass shooting wants to turn advocacy into action.

Zeneta Everhart announced on Friday that she is running for the Buffalo Common Council seat representing the city's Masten District.

As the mother of Zaire Goodman, Everhart has been a vocal advocate for change since the shooting, including testifying before Congress. Goodman was shot in the neck and is still recovering from his injuries.

Former mayoral candidate India Walton has also announced her intention to run for the seat.

The district, which includes the Jefferson Avenue Tops store where the shooting took place, is currently represented by Ulysees Wingo. He has decided to not seek re-election.

Everhart worked at Spectrum News until 2017 before going to work in state Senator Tim Kennedy's office.
