BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Common Council is looking back at the city's response to last month's historic snowfall.

Department of Public Works Commissioner Nathan Marton says the city was able to respond better than previous storms because it had time to plan ahead for the lake effect blast.

But some council members pushed back, raising concerns about the frequency of snow removal and plowing as well as the coordination with private contractors outlined in this year's snow plan.

"If I'm being perfectly honest, I don't think the response was great in the southern portion of the city," said Councilmember Chris Scanlon. "I think it dragged out. Again, being out in my vehicle, seeing some parts of the city that were untouched for several days."

In South Buffalo, some people were stranded inside their homes for days, waiting for crews to remove the nearly 3 feet of snow on the ground.

Council members did note this was Marton's first storm since taking charge of the Buffalo Public Works Department, and they hope this will also be a learning experience.
