NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in Niagara Falls Monday, talking up three bills looking to reduce the cost of prescription drugs.
The bills focus on making prescription drugs cheaper and more in line with international median pricing, as well as allowing patients, pharmacists and wholesalers to import medicine from around the world.
Gillibrand said the high price of medication needs to be addressed.
"Health care is a human right," Gillibrand said. "It's not a privilege. But right now, lifesaving medication is only lifesaving if people can afford it. This is a health crisis especially for our older adults."
The bills would also let the secretary of Health and Human Services negotiate drug prices for Medicare; a move Gillibrand says could save $450 billion over 10 years.
