These are the primary races to watch on Election Day in Western New York.

New York's 147th Assembly District

The two Republican candidates in this primary have similar political ideologies but say they're very different people.

Incumbent David DiPietro is a retired owner of a dry cleaning business, the former mayor of East Aurora and is seeking his seventh term in the Assembly. He said he represents constituents at a grassroots level.

Mitch Martin is currently a chief with the Erie County Sheriff's Office and behind the scenes has been a local party fixture for years. He's worked for current state Sen. Pat Gallivan and former U.S. Rep. Chris Jacobs and said many local leaders are endorsing him.

Both want to address crime, Second Amendment rights and term limits.

New York's 24th Congressional District

In 2022, Republican U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney defeated primary challenger Mario Fratto with 53% of the vote. However, Fratto believes he can do better this year.

Tenney is an attorney and former state assemblymember, who also ran a family newspaper group and pharmaceutical printing and packaging company. She has the endorsements of Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Freedom Caucus founding member Jim Jordan, among others. She has publicly questioned her challenger's policy positions, motivations and personal and campaign finances.

Fratto is a Geneva attorney who said he is currently managing his father's granite business. He's positioning himself as a candidate to the political right of Tenney. Fratto has called into question votes she's taken on immigration, transgender rights and funding for Planned Parenthood, among other things.

The 24th Congressional District is widely considered a safe Republican district. It spans a large area that includes Watertown in the North Country and Lockport in Niagara County.

Orleans County district attorney

Orleans County District Attorney Joe Cardone is retiring after nearly 33 years in office. Two of his assistant district attorneys, Susan Howard and John Sansone, are hoping to succeed him and are facing off in a Republican primary.

The current first assistant, Susan Howard, has been practicing alongside Cardone since the beginning of her law career 24 years ago. Howard became first assistant in 2011, after her opponent, John Sansone, held the position for four years.

Both candidates share decades of experience, a concern for current bail reform laws and a will to partner with law enforcement to keep the community safe.

Howard has been endorsed by the Conservative Party and the Shooters Committee on Political Education (S.C.O.P.E.). Sansone is endorsed by the Orleans County Sheriff and Minority Leader Bob Ortt.
