MODENA, N.Y. – New Yorkers interested in connecting with federal agencies for information regarding Medicaid, Social Security and other benefits can visit Rep. Pat Ryan's Constituent Advocacy Resources Empowerment Services (C.A.R.E.S.) Van.
The mobile unit features a team of caseworkers that providing residents with individualized resources for veterans, Medicaid services and more.
Fishkill resident Peter Lapre attended an informational session at the Plattekill Library on Tuesday afternoon. Lapre said that despite working for the Federal Railroad Administration, he still has unanswered questions regarding his propspective retirement benefits.
“I was looking for some help, some guidance with regard to Social Security benefits," Lapre said. "Getting in touch with Social Security, trying to have a face-to-face meeting, has been next to impossible, if not impossible."
That's why Lapre said he's trying to be proactive ahead of his retirement and learn all about the benefits available to him.
"I didn't know what to expect," Lapre said. "I'm glad I came. I was able to get some answers and some assistance. So, I'm hoping for a good outcome at this point."
Plattekill Library Director Darren Lansperry said staff are often asked questions related to federally funded services. As a result, he said having caseworkers onsite can help educate residents throughout the Plattekill community.
"We're receiving a lot of questions regarding signing on to the internet for these services," Lasperry said. "People now need their Real Identification Card, their services might have expired, so they need to reregister for the programs they're a part of like SNAP and free cellphones...they need assistance."
Caseworkers from Ryan's C.A.R.E.S. Van are scheduled to visit The Walkway Over the Hudson Mayfest on Saturday in Highland.
