ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Khalil Shakir has been driving a used 2021 Subaru since he entered the NFL in 2022. Despite a four-year contract extension reportedly worth up to roughly $60 million, the Buffalo Bills wide receiver has no plans to give up his reliable car.
“Probably nothing crazy,” Shakir said about the possibility of adding a new vehicle after officially signing the deal on Monday. He said the first person to reach out to him was fellow wideout Curtis Samuel, who joked that Shakir can now afford the new ride.
Shakir’s extension will keep him in Buffalo through the 2029 season. It’s a big achievement for the fifth-round draft pick out of Boise State. He calls Buffalo a special place.
“I made sure to express to my agents that I wanted to be a Bill,” Shakir said. “Obviously, playing with 17 (Josh Allen) and there’s nothing like putting that Bills jersey on and going out there. And Bills Mafia, there’s nothing like it. Just super grateful.”
Shakir is coming off a career year while leading the Bills in catches and receiving yards. The guy catches almost everything thrown his way and he’s tough to tackle in the open field — a reason he’s become one of Josh Allen’s favorite targets.
“I’m super thankful for him and made sure that I just let him know that I wouldn’t be where I’m at without him and him putting his trust in me,” he said. “Just our communication with each other. I mentioned this earlier, my success so far has been from him. For him to be able to trust me and be out there and play with him, I truly believe he’s the best athlete I’ve ever been around so I’m grateful to continue to play with him.”
For Shakir, the new deal only serves as further motivation to become an even better player than he already has. He also credited his wife, his father and Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady, holding back tears at times during his news conference with reporters on Monday.
“It just makes you want to work that much harder that you have an organization behind you that believes in you and wants to lean on you a bit more,” Shakir said. “So as I’m doing my work the signs of tiredness are shut out right away.”
