A proposal is on the table for the temporary reuse of the Braymiller Market site.
Right now, the City of Buffalo wants to temporarily move the Buffalo Police Department B District Station to the former Braymiller location on Ellicott Street, while the department's current location undergoes renovations over the next 10-12 months.
Braymiller Market was the only grocery store located in downtown Buffalo, and closed in December 2024 with Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon citing unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, an increased shift to remote work and a decrease in downtown foot traffic.
Officials are also proposing a new idea that the front portion of that Ellicott Street building be used as a fresh food distribution site so residents have access to quality food.
"Temporarily co-locating the Buffalo Police Department B District station and a fresh food distribution site is a practical and cost-effective reuse of the former Braymiller Market that will provide significant economic benefits to the city as well as improve the health, safety and quality of life of residents in the surrounding downtown neighborhood," Scanlon said in part in a statement. "I want to thank Stuart Green for his continued investment in Buffalo, we are committed to securing a sustainable and beneficial future for the property."
