With arctic cold temperatures expected next week, the SPCA Serving Erie County has a number of tips and reminders to keep pets safe.

“Just like us, our pets are susceptible to the dangers of extreme cold,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allison Kean. “We encourage all pet owners to take the necessary steps to protect their pets from the elements.”

The SPCA recommends owners keep their pets indoors whenever possible and limit time outside; wipe their bellies and feet as soon as they come indoors and have a warm place to lie down; protect paw pads from ice; use vet-approved paw protectants, booties and pet-friendly ice melts; consider a coat or sweater to protect from the elements; do not let pets off-leash on snow and ice; make sure pets have updated ID tags; and inspect parking spaces for antifreeze spills.

The coldest air of the season so far is expected early next week in upstate New York, with wind chill temperatures falling well below zero. Wind chill values could reach 15 degrees below zero across much of upstate.
