The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is launching the "Hidden Disabilities Sunflower" program on Friday.

Anyone with a disability like autism, hearing loss or any other condition requiring additional assistance, can discreetly show they need support by wearing a sunflower lanyard, badge, or wristband.

Airport staff and NFTA officials have been trained to look out for and recognize those symbols.

“The NFTA is dedicated to making air travel a positive and stress-free experience for all,” said Kim Minkel, executive director of the NFTA. “Airport staff have been trained to recognize the Sunflower symbol and will provide compassionate assistance ensuring a smooth journey for program participants. Launching the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program at BUF reflects our dedication to ensure every passenger feels understood, respected and supported.”

“We are thrilled for NFTA to join the growing number of U.S. and international airports and businesses that participate in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. NFTA’s exemplary commitment to better support passengers and airport staff that have non-apparent disabilities will make a huge difference in the lives of those that choose to wear the Sunflower,” Sunflower Regional Director - USA Lynn Smith added.

This program first came to life in the U.K. and since has received praise across the globe.
