The City of Buffalo is getting ready to ring in the new year with its annual New Year's Eve ball drop and fireworks celebration.

The city announced the following road closures for the celebration, which go into effect at 10 a.m. Tuesday:

  • Huron Street from Pearl and Ellicott streets
  • Genesee Street from Ellicott to Huron streets
  • Washington Street from Chippewa and Mohawk streets

City officials and Buffalo Police held a press conference Monday to tell about some of this year's security measures.

"When you're looking at, you know, 3,000 or more people coming into Roosevelt Plaza to watch the event, you are going to see a significant police uniform presence, as you always do,” said Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia. “We will also have our SWAT team down here. We want to make sure that they're looking down on everybody to make sure that we have a safe event."

The party gets underway at 10 p.m. New Year's Eve night at the Electric Tower.
