There's a renewed push to address the growing need for lifeguards in the Buffalo area.
Acting Mayor Christopher Scanlon made the announcement Tuesday morning outside the Connors, Kait, Harrity Memorial Pool.
Scanlon said the goal of the lifeguard certification and training sessions being offered is to bring 100 more lifeguards into the fold through the program and urges parents and educators to encourage young people to get involved, as they will learn valuable lifesaving skills and will be compensated.
"First and foremost, it's a job that pays $20 an hour," Scanlon said. "But more than that, you gain life-saving and leadership skills applicable to future application. And, quite frankly, you're giving back to the community. Our lifeguards ensure pool safety."
