ROCHESTER, N.Y. — According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 200 home fires each year start with a Christmas tree.
Jeff Blair with the Henrietta Fire Department says there are a few simple tips for families to follow to make sure this holiday season is a happy one.
“Make sure you get the freshest one you can," Blair said. "Cut the end off before putting it into the stand and water it every day."
Between ornaments, tinsel and lights, people put a lot on their trees. But Blair says less is more when it comes to the items we’re plugging in.
“When you do plug in things, make sure not to overload circuits," Blair said. "Don’t plug in six lights into one spot."
Blair also recommends double-checking light strands and making sure nothing is broken or frayed. He says even if they were fine at the end of last season, you never know what has happened over a year.
Nearly 47,000 fires occur during the winter holidays, according to the American Red Cross. Blair says planning ahead can set up everyone for a safe and happy holiday season.
“Have working smoke detectors in the house, have a fire safety plan and make sure everyone knows the plan," Blair said.
