A long-vacant building in Cheektowaga will soon become the site of a new home for veterans experiencing homelessness.
The Tunnels to Towers Foundation broke ground on the Buffalo Veterans Village project on Thursday.
The national nonprofit plans to demolish a property that's sat empty on Harlem Road for a decade and build an apartment complex for more than 90 former service members.
They'll be housed on the second floor while the ground floor will offer on-site support services including mental health support, addiction treatment, education access and job training.
"They're not homeless by accident," Tunnel To Towers Foundation Executive Vice President Matthew Mahoney said. "There's been a series of things that have happened to them [and] that they've had to deal with. We need to work on those issues with them to get them back on their feet. So the first floor, in all of our facilities, goes to that investment in their lives."
Tunnels to Towers launched its Homeless Veteran Program last year, helping provide housing to more than 6,500 vets across the country.
