Update: Buffalo police announced Monday night that a 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with first-degree assault and unlawful possession of a weapon by a persons under 16 after a stabbing inside McKinley High School.

McKinley High School sheltered in place on Monday after Buffalo police say a student was stabbed by another student inside the school.

According to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, a fight broke out in a school stairwell near a hallway at around 1:10 p.m. Police say a 15-year-old boy was stabbed three times with a knife — once each in the back, neck and arm, by another student. Police say the student who allegedly did the stabbing left the scene and ran to a third flood classroom, where he and another student allegedly involved in the altercation were taken into custody by responding officers. Police say a knife was recovered from the scene.

The incident was captured on security cameras, according to police, who are reviewing footage of the incident.

Gramaglia says police are working toward arresting the two suspects and the Erie County District Attorney's Office is assisting in determining charges against them.

Officials say a school security officer quickly arrived on the scene and assisted the victim to the nurse's office. Police say the victim was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital and is in serious, but stable condition and is expected to survive.

"The situation was stabilized very quickly," Gramaglia said. "The school was very quickly put into a shelter-in-place. They were taken into custody very quickly. The system worked. School security was on scene within seconds of the stabbing occurring.”

Gramaglia says there are weapons detectors in place at the school that do detect knives, and officials are investigating how the knife entered the school.

According to police, Monday's stabbing stems from a stabbing incident involving the same three individuals that occurred in July near the Fountain Plaza on Main Street.

"This was not a random act," Gramaglia said. "This was a known situation. A known assailant [and] a known victim in this case based on that earlier summer incident."

"We are feeling relieved that the student who was hurt is going to be OK," Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Tonja Williams Knight said. "We want all children able to report to school and parents to know that their children are safe at McKinley High School.”

Williams Knight says school will resume on Tuesday, and extra security will be in place, along with security resource officers and counselors for students and staff.
