Our Lady of Victory National Shrine & Basilica is looking to save the dome after years of harsh weather have taken their toll.

OLV is asking for community support through a $3 million campaign. The new community campaign will aid the dome restoration project by providing resources needed to replace it completely with new copper materials.

The Basilica’s main dome is comprised of approximately 8,000 square feet of the original, 100-year-old copper. According to OLV officials, there are multiple areas where the copper dome has deteriorated to a point that it is allowing substantial water infiltration, which, in turn, has caused plaster damage to interior areas of the sanctuary, as well as damage to painted artwork and frescoes.

"OLV National Shrine & Basilica represents the life and legacy of Father Nelson Baker," a press release read. "Decades of Buffalo’s harsh weather / climate have taken a toll on the Basilica’s copper dome. After exhaustive assessments, OLV will restore the shell of the existing dome with a brand-new copper dome. These efforts will ensure the long-term viability of Father Baker’s majestic church."

It's already received a $500,000 matching grant from the New York State Office of Historic Preservation.

The Basilica and its campus earned New York State and National Register of Historic Places designations in May.

If community members wish to support the dome restoration project, they can text the word DOME to 53555 or call 716-828-9648 and press 1.
