NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The homeowners of a property damaged by a CSX train that derailed Monday night say they are a "wreck."
Dean Harris and his wife salvaged what they could from the destroyed garage, including his motorcycle and statues from a nativity scene Christmas decoration.
A statement from CSX said the company is working with authorities to investigate the derailment and added, “Our primary focus right now is the health and safety of onsite staff and personnel, the surrounding community, and mitigating risk to the environment. CSX appreciates the swift response of the Niagara Falls fire department. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.”
Harris said he believes this could have been avoided.
“You know, you can go blaming people all day long. It all comes down to human error is what it comes down to. Just like operating a motor vehicle," said Harris. "This, I think, was controllable. I think they could have done a better job after the first one happened 40 years ago, whenever it was. Things should have been handled a little bit better for safety.”
By the following day, the garage had been completely torn down and the train was sitting several yards away on the tracks. The Harrises are dealing with a totaled car, loss of their garage and lost wages from missing work to deal with the accident.
