One Erie County legislator is looking to cap the time local elected officials are in office.

Legislator John Bargnesi has introduced a bill that would establish term limits in Erie County.

If signed into law, Erie County legislators, along with the county executive, comptroller, sheriff, clerk and district attorney would only be allowed to serve three four-year terms in office.

"Term limits give new opportunity for people to serve in local government,” said Bargnesi. “New members in government allow for new ideas, encourage fresh perspectives and promote accountability. This is a common sense measure that will foster a dynamic and responsive government."

The bill is now up for consideration in the county Legislature.

Bargnesi wants to see the three term limit begin with the 2030 election cycle.
