Buffalo Water is asking everyone in the city to take part in testing their water lines to see if they have lead in them.
City leaders say they don't know if more than 30,000 lines in the city have lead or not.
"Clean and safe drinking water plays a critical role in our daily lives," Buffalo Water Board Chair Oluwole "OJ" McFoy said in a statement. "Last year, Buffalo Water became one of the first utilities in New York State to release an inventory map nearly a year in advance so residents could see the number of unknown and lead service lines in Buffalo for themselves and provide necessary information to help Buffalo Water locate and address them. Residents, whether they are homeowners or renters, should participate in the service line survey, explore the service line inventory map, and follow the EPA's recommendations to ensure the continued safety of our drinking water."
The department has published an online survey which has directions on how to test your own lines.
You're then being asked to send in those results to the city through an online survey.
You can find the survey here.
