Western New York got to see quite a show in the skies overnight as the famed Northern Lights were visible in parts of the area.

This is a geomagnetic phenomenon that isn't always visible this far south. A severe solar storm triggered these colorful auroras that could be seen as far south as Alabama.
The Space Weather Prediction Center says that least five coronal mass ejections have been directed towards Earth. These explosions of plasmas and magnetic fields from the sun's corona create the storm.
If strong enough, the storms could impact infrastructure, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigations, radio, and satellite operations.
