Catholic Charities is opening it newest food pantry, which is expected to serve more than 1,700 households per year.

The Perry-St. Brigid Food Pantry opened its doors insides the Commodore Perry Extension Apartments. The space includes a waiting room, offices, storage and client service areas.

"The new location for this pantry provides a safer, more welcoming environment for our clients and staff and brings us closer to the community," said Julie Lulek, senior director of Catholic Charities. "In this new space, we can offer more choice and better accommodate our clients whether meeting special diet needs or offering culturally appropriate foods. Client choice not only allows our volunteers to service the clients with dignity, but also results in less food waste."

The new pantry is made possible thanks to $500,000 from the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority.

"A cold, blustery day like today reminds us just how important an emergency food pantry is for people in need," said Dr. Callie Johnson, deputy mayor of Buffalo. "This brand new facility in the Old First Ward will be able to serve more residents and will be more accessible. I want to thank Catholic Charities for once again stepping up and making a difference in our city."

It is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
