Buffalo's Roosevelt Park is set to receive $2,085,542 in federal funding through the National Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership, Senator Chuck Schumer announced Thursday.
Schumer says the city of Buffalo will use this funding to redevelop the park's aging facilities, add new fitness and sporting areas, plant more trees, and significantly increase green space across the park.
“The revitalization of Roosevelt Park is not just about bricks and mortar—it's a commitment to the well-being of the Buffalo community. For years, the park's aging facilities have been a concern to community members, which is why I am proud to deliver this $2 million federal investment to give the park the breath of fresh air it has long needed,” said Sen. Schumer. “Investing in our parks isn’t just creating more opportunities to get outside it is investing in our children and our families of Western New York and I will always fight to help deliver the funding to build a cleaner, greener and more equitable Buffalo.”
Specifically, funding will be put towards redeveloping the park's multi-use athletic field, as well as providing a walking/running loop, two tennis courts, two basketball courts, an adult fitness area, a picnic area, a park entry terrace and a chess area. Additionally, 100 new trees will be planted, landscaping will be updated, and two pavilions with lighting and site furnishings will be added.
“I am grateful to Senator Schumer for delivering significant funding for improvements to Roosevelt Park. This work will transform the park and make it another great space for enjoyment and fun in East Buffalo," Mayor Byron Brown said.
