The NFTA is getting a big chunk of change to go green.

Western New York will now see 20 new electric buses on the road thanks to a nearly $30 million federal DOT grant.

"The NFTA just got a major boost to supercharge modern, new electric buses and a cleaner commute across Western N.Y. This nearly $29 million in federal funding will allow the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority to purchase 20 brand new electric buses and expand charging infrastructure, giving Western New Yorkers a cleaner commute, all while fueling our fight against climate change,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer. "As the wheels of the NFTA buses go round and round, pollution and carbon emissions will keep going down and down. I am proud to deliver this major boost for the NFTA to keep the wheels of our economy rolling and put Buffalo on the path to a brighter and cleaner transportation future."

The money will help replace the diesel-powered buses currently used by the NFTA and will help upgrade changing infrastructure.

The new buses are expected to drastically reduce the use of fossil fuels needed to power the transit bus fleet.

"This investment will significantly accelerate NFTA’s Battery Electric Bus Deployment program," said Kimberley Minkel, NFTA executive director. "I’m so thankful for the commitment and advocacy provided by Senator Schumer, Senator Gillibrand, and Congressman Higgins. This funding will help protect the environment by supporting NFTA’s mission of providing clean, safe and affordable transportation to our communities."

They will also save the NFTA an estimated $440,000 per year.
