Niagara County is joining counties across New York state in issuing a state of emergency, as officials say any number of migrants would bring challenges for the county.
They say the county currently is struggling with finding housing for the local homeless population and does not have many additional resources it could provide to incoming migrants.
Local law enforcement also has concerns over public safety.
"I don't know who is coming here from a law enforcement perspective,” said Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti. “That's very concerning for to me, as to who is coming here. We have no information on the vetting process."
The county says it can rescind the state of emergency at any time or renew it every 30 days.
