ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have changed their mindset from playoff caliber to championship caliber.

But if they plan to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next month, they know they’ll have to cut down on their turnovers — an issue that’s plagued them for a big part of this season.

"It’s clear that we make it awfully hard on ourselves sometimes, which the good part of that is we figure out ways to win in spite of that sometimes, but the reality of it is that’s something you can’t continue to do and expect to win games," Head Coach Sean McDermott said on Wednesday as the Bills prepared for their AFC Divisional Round matchup with the Bengals.

Only two teams gave the ball away more than the Bills during the regular season, and they added three more turnovers in Sunday’s Wild Card win over Miami. Josh Allen had two interceptions, plus a fumble that turned into a Dolphins touchdown and erased a 17-0 first half lead for the Bills.

"Last week maybe getting too aggressive and just understanding with the lead, just forcing longer drives instead of helping their team get back in it and that’s what I really did," Allen said.

While Allen’s miscues have made some games closer than they might want, his aggressive playmaking is also a big part of the reason they’ve won 14 games this season. McDermott does not want to take that away from their star quarterback while still addressing the concerns.

"There’s a balance there," McDermott said. "You prepare to put the work in and there’s calculated risk, but calculated being the key word there. I trust our players though that they’re going to get it corrected and take great ownership of it."

"You can’t just try to eliminate every single turnover and play scared," Allen said. "You still have to be the way that we play. We’re aggressive. We want to score touchdowns. That’s the gist of it to be honest."

Allen added that there’s a thin line between being aggressive and being reckless — but he’s paid to help this team score touchdowns. It's all part of the Josh Allen Experience — one that’s lifted his team into the Divisional Round for the third straight year.
