BUFFALO, N.Y. — Numbers from the CDC show a massive increase in flu cases this year when compared to the last year.

In New York state alone, experts say they're seeing over a six times increase in multiple areas.

Our Viktoria Hallikäär spoke to Dr. Thomas Russo, University at Buffalo’s chief of infectious disease, about what this flu season could hold.

We’re getting to that time of year where people are getting together and celebrating the holidays. With these numbers, it seems like that’s coming at an increased risk. Right now, the best advice is stay home if you’re sick and wear a mask around others. And of course, get those flu shots to help protect you.

“Since we had no flu for the last two seasons, immunity from prior infection has waned,” Dr. Russo said. “Therefore, the population is more susceptible than it usually is. More people be at risk, and therefore the concern for a greater number of cases and potentially more severe cases this year.”

With that double whammy of flu and COVID coming this year, doctors emphasize getting your COVID booster as well, the best way to avoid life threatening symptoms from either viruses.

And one note for those over 65 years old, there are also special flu shots designed to give you a better immune response.
