For many, family legacies are a source of pride. It’s the same for the Pileckis, who started a tradition in firefighting.

Forty-one years after it started, Andy Pilecki’s son David is following in his footsteps.

“When he was small, I used to take him to the fire hall and showed him around, and he enjoyed going there and actually helping out in the activities to the best to where he was able to,” Andy said.

For the last five years, David has volunteered with Shawnee Volunteer Fire.

“He is constantly helping people,” Andy says. “He will not go ahead and say no to anybody.”

The two share their stories and lessons, bonding along the way.

Sometimes his dad wonders if between school, work, firefighting, and more, David is too busy. David doesn’t give it a second thought.

“Probably since 10 years-old when I saw that the age was 13 or 14, that's what I was waiting for, just waiting,” David explained. “Come on, grow faster, you know?”

Last year, he ran 122 calls. This year, he’s already around 40.

“I don't think I could live without it. I think it's just a part of my daily routine now,” David said.

He’s one of 25 students statewide to get a scholarship from the Firefighter Association of the State of New York for their service.

As he moves on to college and his career, David doesn’t have plans on stopping any time soon and encourages other people to sign on.

“Just spend one day at the first session, and I don't think you'll be disappointed,” he said.
