BUFFALO, N.Y. — Black Restaurant Week is in full swing and dozens of restaurants, coffee shops and bakeries are serving up a special menu for the celebration.

With more than 50 businesses participating, there’s plenty to taste and try for Black Restaurant Week.

The flavor and culture of African American cuisine is in the spotlight all week as the event has been moved from February to June to coincide with the Juneteenth holiday.

This marks the fifth year that Buffalo Urban League Young Professionals have hosted the event, the biggest one to date with 58 participating restaurants.

Owners say that with historic racial and systemic inequalities and many restaurants still finding their way after the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to let the community know they’re still in business.

“The first thing they do is when they walk in they say, 'oh my God, this place is beautiful; oh my God, you guys have air conditioning,' you know, and they actually want to come and dine in and enjoy that experience ... because food taste better when you can get it hot, fresh, straight from the kitchen,” Brothers Restaurant Owner and Chef Romone Anderson said.
