BUFFALO, N.Y. — ​The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority has reversed its decision to drop its mask mandate on buses and rail systems, as well as at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport and Niagara Falls International Airport. 

The move came after a news conference Wednesday in which Gov. Kathy Hochul stated that the mask mandate for public transportation is still in effect in New York.

The transportation authority released this statement on Wednesday:

"First and foremost, we want to apologize for what is sure to be confusing to our travelers and riders, but due to the Governor's announcement updating COVID regulations from the New York State Department of Health, masks will still be required in all public transportation entities within the State of New York until further notice. This includes the Buffalo Niagara International and Niagara Falls International Airports, Metro Bus and Rail and all Paratransit services. We will provide any updates or changes to this policy accordingly."

The NFTA says according to the TSA, there will be no federal enforcement of the mandate at checkpoints.

The decision by the NFTA to lift the mask requirement on Tuesday came after a federal judge in Florida voided the national mask mandate covering airplanes and other public transportation. As a result, a number of major airlines and airports rushed to drop their requirements on Monday after the Transportation Security Administration announced it wouldn’t enforce a January 2021 security directive that applied to airplanes, airports, taxis and other mass transit.
