AMHERST, N.Y. — The town of Amherst is getting a major renovation, one meant to give everyone a little fresh air.
Erie County Legislator Jeanne Vinal says $2.4 million is being put into the Amherst Central Park Project.
“I am delighted to be able to deliver funding for such an important community project,” said Vinal. “Amherst does not contain any county parks, and while our neighborhood parks provide modest opportunities for recreation, the new Central Park will provide much greater amenities, and the market stalls will provide an opportunity for small business owners to showcase their goods and services.”
The new park will combine the Audubon Recreation Center with the former Westwood Country Club for a combined 325 acres. It’ll also feature permanent market stalls that legislators say could be used for year-round farmer’s markets.
“Legislator Vinal has always supported our vision for Amherst Central Park. Thank you to her and the Legislature for supporting this incredible project. I am pleased that the Town and County is able to partner to invest this funding as we create a world-class park that will be an anchor in our community. This project is unlike one we have seen in our region in decades and will truly be a destination year-round,” said Amherst Supervisor Brian Kulpa.
Vinal says the park is a response to increased demand for outdoor activities.
“I want to thank Supervisor Brian Kulpa for taking on such a critical project. The events of the past few years have led to an increased demand for outdoor recreation. This project will allow residents to enjoy leisure activities in newly reclaimed green space and provide opportunities to stimulate the economy through the market stalls in the public square. I can see it playing host to community events for generations to come, supporting local businesses and bringing our community closer together,” Vinal said.
