ELMA, N.Y. — A local priest is working to help people fleeing Ukraine.
Father Walter Grabowski, who is originally from Poland, asked parishioners at St. Gabriel’s Church in Elma to give whatever they could to support Ukrainian refugees.
In just a couple of weeks, the church has raised nearly $24,000. The money is being wired to Father Grabowski’s family members, who still live along the Poland – Ukraine border.
They’re using the donation to buy supplies, clothes, food and water for Ukrainians who have made the trek to Poland escaping Russia’s violent attack.
“People still bringing it here to the church,” Father Grabowski said. “They can drop it off here to the office, there is a collection office in the back of the church. We collected a few thousand dollars, not millions and billions, but a little thing makes a big difference.”
