BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Sabres have traded former second overall pick Sam Reinhart to the Florida Panthers in exchange for goalie prospect Devon Levi and a 2022 first round draft pick.

The Sabres selected Reinhart second overall in the 2014 NHL Draft. The forward has scored 134 goals across 454 NHL games, including a team-leading 25 goals this past season.

Levi, a 7th round pick of the Panthers last year, led Canada's National Junior Team to a silver medal at the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

This is the second trade the team has made in as many days. On Friday, the Sabres traded defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen to the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Robert Hagg, the the 14th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, which they used to draft Swedish right winger Isak Rosen, and a second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Reinhart, a 26-year-old restricted free agent, will get a chance for a fresh start with a playoff contender.

“Sam has established himself as one of the best playmaking scorers in the league, and we are thrilled to be able to add him to our Panthers lineup,” Panthers GM Bill Zito said. “His competitiveness and hunger to succeed will fit seamlessly with the culture we are building here in South Florida.”

And Sabres GM Kevyn Adams might not yet be done dealing. Captain Jack Eichel is also on the trade block in Adams’ bid to start fresh by overhauling a team that finished last in the standings for the fourth time in eight years and in the midst of an NHL record-matching 10-year playoff drought.
