GETZVILLE, N.Y. — A newly-built group home in Getzville sits half empty as Heritage Christian Services struggles to fully staff it due to an ongoing wage crisis for direct services/care professionals.

“As a parent, I’m frustrated and I’m hopeful that we’ll find caring capable people who really want to embrace working with our loved ones,” said Kathy Bunce, mother of 26-year-old Samantha, who is one of six residents slated to be moving into their new home.

Staff at Heritage Christian Services were hopeful everyone would be settled in this summer, but it may be closer to fall.

According to The Arc New York, DSPs currently earn between $10 and $13 per hour. The profession has its challenges, but parents and advocates say they do not compare to the rewards.

“This job will change your life,” said Bunce. “You will be a part of a group. You will be a part of a mission. You will be a part of supporting someone and giving them everything they need when you’re with them.”

All of the positions that are open with Heritage Christian Services come with fully-paid on-the-job training.
